Multiple Academy Award nominee "Juno" was one of the biggest winners at Film Independent's 2008 Spirit Awards, taking home the prize for Best Picture, Best First Screenplay (Diablo Cody), and Best Actress (Ellen Page). Julian Schnabel's beautiful French-language film "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" took home major awards as well, capturing Best Director (Schnabel) and Best Cinematography for Janusz Kaminski's sublime imagery. The Best Actor award went to Philip Seymour Hoffman for "The Savages," which also picked up Best Screenplay honors for writer-director Tamara Jenkins. Supporting honors went to Cate Blanchett ("I'm Not There.") and Chiwetel Ejiofor ("Talk to Me").The afternoon was filled with touching tributes to late movie star Heath Ledger, whose untimely death last month has left his award-winning collaborators somber when reaching the podium. "I'm Not There." director Todd Haynes's tribute was especially moving, which he delivered while accepting the honorary Robert Altman Award.
