Half Nelson
Ryan Gosling stars in "Half Nelson," a powerful drama about a young man's struggle to uphold his ideals in the face of drug addiction and a world gone insane. Dan Dunne (Gosling) is a junior high teacher at a poor school in Brooklyn, and looks to make a difference in the lives of his impoverished, frustrated students. But while he helps the students find courage at his job, beyond school he nurses a serious crack addiction, which leads to an unlikely friendship after a female student discovers his problem. Gosling has received a surprise Oscar nomination for his terrific performance in this small but ambitious film, which was discovered at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival.
